Vegan Food Mallorca

Earlier this year I (Tash), went on a two week holiday to Mallorca with my parents. We had previously been to the island 20 years ago (before I was vegan) and whilst my memories were a little hazy, one thing I did remember was the food.

Being a small island, Mallorca is very well known for its quality of sea food, but also it’s meat dishes. As a family we would regularly order anything from steak to snails. However my parents did remind me of one incident when Dad ordered lobster. When realising that the same lobster I had just been watching in the tank (alive and well), was now going to be cooked and eaten by my Dad. I got so upset that Dad had to order something different.

Now at age 31 I returned as a vegan, wondering if I would be stuck to eating salad and chips for two weeks. Alas, whilst Mallorca is far from the vegan capital of the Balearic Islands, it is definitely taking notice of ‘The Vegan’ movement. Here are the best locations I found.

Bon Lloc

Location: Palma

Bon Lloc was originally opened in 1978, and was the first vegetarian restaurant in Mallorca. The restaurant is now completely vegan and head chef Toni Rodriguez is also the owner of a vegan bakery.

It’s the perfect place to go for a slap up 3 course vegan dinner. I have to recommend the ‘Heura (chicken replacement), bimi and cauliflower with satay sauce’ starter. There was so much flavour on this plate and the “chicken” tasted amazing.

Bon Lloc Summer Roll

MyMuyBeuno

Location: Palma

Situated in Palma on a second floor balcony, MyMuyBeauno is the perfect breakfast or lunch location. It reminds me of Mae Deli in London, with a variety of salad style dishes that you select from to make a bowl. They also have breakfast favourites like avocado on toast and an incredible sugar free vegan desert selection.

Mixed Salad

Be Green

Location: Santa Ponça

A small daytime cafe in the beach side town of Santa Ponça. Whilst Be Green, isn’t exclusively vegan, they do cater to vegans with a great hot tofu and pepper wrap. As well as a selection of vegan sweet treats. However, my favourite thing here was their incredible juice and smoothie menu. With over 25 different combinations, you never have to have the same thing twice. I recommend number 12 and number 5.

Plaer Natural

Location: Palma (Old Town)

Small, quaint and homey is the best way to describe Plaer Natural. Found in a small square hidden in Palma’s old town, it’s easy to walk past it. However, it serves some of the best vegan food I have ever eaten.

Although not exclusively vegan, all dishes can be adapted to suit. The perfect meal to have is the nachos (to share) followed by the coconut curry and make sure you save room for the coconut and lemon tarte.

Bon Lloc “Chicken” Starter

Hindu Swagat

Location: Peguira

Over the years Peguira has become ‘Little Germany’, with many of the German tourists choosing to stay in this area of the island due to its beautiful bays and crystal clear waters. As a result many of the restaurants cater to the German diet, serving a selection of wurst alongside the traditional Spanish menu.

However, when we googled for a vegan restaurant the Hindu Swagat appeared. As the name suggests, it is Indian and one of my most enjoyable meals. Run by a family, the main waitress Ritu is incredibly friendly and will ensure that the head chef (her father) caters to all your vegan needs.

The Seed

Location: Port Andratx

This was by far my favourite place to eat during the two weeks. The Seed, owned by Stephanie Carpentier a life and health coach, can be found in a small side street, directly opposite the main harbour of Port Andratx. The decor is super cute and the ideal place to get your cute Spanish cafe instagram picture.

The menu is a combination of vegetarian and vegan, however pretty much every item can be made vegan. All week, I had been craving pizza and The Seed definitely delivered. They also offer  ‘make your own salad’, which was filled with beautiful fresh ingredients. It’s also important to mention, that you MUST leave room for desert, because the Banana Bread and the Coconut Panacotta are two of the best vegan deserts I have ever eaten.
